Pyramid Pose
Parsvottanasana
Pyramid Pose is a standing forward fold over a straight front leg with the hips squared and, classically, the hands in reverse prayer behind the back. It stretches the hamstrings and opens the shoulders and wrists while challenging balance on a narrow base. Squareness in the hips defines the shape.
Alignment cues
- Square the hips toward the front leg, both legs straight
- Press the palms together behind the back in reverse prayer
- Fold over the front leg from the hip creases
Benefits
- Stretches the hamstrings of both legs
- Improves balance and hip alignment
- Lengthens the spine
Modifications
- Rest the hands on blocks instead of reaching the floor
- Keep the back heel slightly turned in for stability
